In Year 1 children are expected to read for 15 minutes every night. This reading may be a combination of reading their take home reader, listening to you read their reader (so that you can model fluent and expressive reading to them) and reading their word lists.
It is important that you take the time to listen and monitor your child's reading. The books that are sent home should be books that your child can read with minimal assistance from yourself. If a book is too easy or too hard please let your child's teacher know so that we can ensure that your child is selecting books from the correct level.
It is an expectation that you record your child's reading in their Record Book. This is simply a matter of signing to indicate that you have listened to them read. Not only does this then let us know that they are reading regularly but it also shows your child that you value their homework reading.
Ideally, homework should occur shortly after arriving home from school. Once your child has had some afternoon tea they should then develop the routine of completing their homework. Remember that homework is set to establish good study and organisational skills so that your child will be able to work independently at home in the future.
